Grades Explained

American Walnut

(Juglans Nigra)

FANCY GRADE

Fancy grade is sold as a one sided blank, although it will usually have some figure coming through the other side. Usually the right hand side is the predominant side. There are some real "sleepers" in this grade as they are only going to get better when machined.

EXTRA FANCY GRADE

Extra fancy has good figure on both sides of the blank but is not necessarily equal one side to the other. This grade is my most popular grade.

EXTRA FANCY PLUS GRADE

Extra fancy plus is a blank that is not quite exhibition grade, yet stands out from the extra fancy grade. It will be full figured on both sides and equal in the amount of figure one side to the other.

EXHIBITION GRADE

Exhibition grade is a one of a kind blank with extraordinary figure and color, often times being set apart by fiddleback along with crotch figure. In the case of an Exhibition grade fiddleback blank, the stripe will be predominant, the full length of the blank, and equal on both sides of the blank.

Circassian Walnut

(Juglans Regia)

GRADES 4, 5, 6 & Exhibition

Circassian walnut (Juglans Regia) is sold in 4 grades. Grades four, five, six and exhibition grade. I do not sell the lower grades. As the grade of this wood increases. the amount of streaking and marbling (black lines) increases. The colors of this wood can vary a great deal depending upon what country or specifically what area in a country a tree is cut. This wood is often times referred to as "Turkish" walnut, although truth be known, most wood sold as Turkish is not cut in Turkey.

In the case of a burl, the amount and intensity of the burl will increase as the grade increases.
